Last week, I received my permanent residence visa (F-5) in the mail. Finally!!! After more than 3 months of waiting and thinking that I would not be granted the visa. Why? You may ask. It’s just a permanent visa.
My husband and I have submitted all the requirements and we were told that all we had to do was to wait for 2 or 3 months for the visa to be approved and mailed to us. Three months passed, but we didn’t receive any. Since I didn’t have my alien registration card and I was still waiting for my new visa, I could not travel out of the country. My husband decided to call the immigration office and we were scheduled for an interview. Yup, an interview. It’s just a permanent visa and we needed to be interviewed. I suppose it depends on the immigration office you are going to. Some Filipinas who applied for F-5 visa told me that they weren’t interviewed and they got their permanent visa after 2 or 3 months.
We were instructed to bring our wedding album, so hubby and I brought our two wedding albums: the very thick one from our wedding in the Philippines and the other from our wedding in Korea. We also prepared all our bank books: his, mine and our joint bank account. Not all immigration officials require you to bring your wedding album, but the bank book or certificate of bank account is mandatory.
Below are the requirements for permanent visa:

Korean spouse’s family registration and resident registration

Documents that specify financial ability equivalent to ￦30 million

Certificate of bank account under the name of applicant or applicant’s family members

Copy of real estate registration

Copy of house lease contract

Certificate of employment of applicant or applicant’s spouse (In our case, we brought statement of accounts that indicate how much salary we get each month, because we failed to get certificates of employment.)
Some immigration officials may ask you to bring other documents.
After two years of staying in Korea as the spouse of a Korean citizen, you can already apply for permanent residence if you don’t want to get Korean citizenship.
Your period of stay is calculated from the day of your alien registration. If you leave the country before the expiration of your sojourn period, the sojourn period ends and calculation of period of stay begins all over again once you return to Korea. However, if you return to Korea not longer than 3 months, the periods you have lived in Korea before and after departure will be added up.
Who else is eligible for permanent residence visa?
- Someone who is divorced or separated from a Korean spouse and can prove that the Korean spouse is liable for the divorce or separation
- Someone whose Korean spouse died or was declared missing by the court
- Someone who is rearing an underage child/children and wants to stay in Korea after being divorced/separated from a Korean spouse
Who is NOT eligible for permanent residence visa?
- Someone who has violated Korean immigration law in the past 3 years. (An individual who has already paid the fine may apply.)
- Someone who has been sentenced to jail or more severe punishment (Of course!)
What are the benefits of having a permanent residence visa?
- Since the permanent residence visa does not expire, there is no need to go to the immigration office every two years to renew your visa or extend your period of sojourn.
- If you would like to go abroad and stay there for less than a year, re-entry permit is not necessary, but if you are staying in another country for more than 1 year, re-entry permit is required.
- You can vote in local elections after 3 years of holding a permanent residence visa.
- You can keep your F-5 visa even after a divorce.
- You can work legally in Korea, just like with F-2 (or F-6) visa.
- You don’t have to pay 50,000 each year for a re-entry permit.
- With an F-5 visa, you are no longer sponsored by your Korean spouse.
- You can’t be deported except if you have committed treason, was sentenced to prison for more than 5 years, or have organized or contributed to illegal immigration.
Another benefit I was told is that I can go through the Korean queues at the airport. Well, I have yet to find out this Chuseok holiday when my husband and I visit the Philippines.

Hello, I am an American citizen and have been married to a South Korean for 8 years. We have a 6 year old child but have lived in America the entire time. My spouse obtained a greencard through me as her sponsor. Can I apply for an F-5 or F-6 korean visa through the Korean consulate in America? Also will my sponsorship of her make it easier for me to obtain. Either of the Korean visas that I want. Ultimately I would prefer to have the F-5 visa because I’d like to live permanently there in South Korea. Any helpful information will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I just had a question about residency! You said that the days you have been out of the country don’t count towards residency requirements – does this apply in all cases? For example, if I’m out of Korea for 3 weeks versus 3 months, both of those amounts don’t count towards my total “residency” period in Korea? Would you be able to clarify?

Hello,
Thank you for the info. I received my F-5 visa yesterday! Through i received my PhD and had 2 years of post-doc contract and enough salary. No needed Korean language etc. but my Korean is level 3 for now. I am wondering if you guys please answer my questions
My questions:
1- If i get a job in another country lie the US and go there for few years, can I come back anytime to Korea? I didn’t understand from other’s comment about “need re-permit entry”..
2- I have heard that if I go abroad, every 2 years one time I must come back to Korea for short and then I can go and continue my job overseas in order to keep my F-5 works. Is that right?

Is there any other benefit for family relation for f-5 visa holder? (such as social welfare for spouse and children)
Me and my wife are foreigners, we have to pay for our children at Kindergarten while Korean or Multi-culture are supported by apply a 아이사랑카드.

Hi! ^^ Under the revised immigration law, the new spouse visa, F-6, allows a foreign spouse to legally stay in Korea even after divorce, or if the marriage has ended due to unexpected circumstances such as death or disappearance of the Korean spouse. In your case, your wife abandoned you, so renewing your F6 visa without your wife should be easy. When is your visa due? I suggest you come to Korea before your F6 expires and have it renewed here, because there are some requirements that you’ll need to get in Korea. I think the immigration will not give you a hard time because of your case and also because you have custody of your child who is a Korean citizen. Now if your visa has already expired, the best thing to do is to contact the Korean Embassy in Canada and ask them if your expired F6 can be renewed there.

I hold an F6 visa. I moved with my Korean wife and son to Canada last year. My wife abandoned us and returned to Korea.
I wonder about returning to Korea with my (legally Korean and CDN) son. My problem is my F6 will have expired. So how could I return? What visa, where would I get it?

You can already go through Korean queues at the airport as long as you are with your husband. My wife and I always do it. Every country pretty much has the same process, “families always travel together,” regardless of whether you even have a residence visa or not. For example, my wife can go through the U.S. immigration line with me on just the ESTA/tourist visa. Immigration uses the same computer anyway. Plus, wouldn’t it always be better for immigration to see you with your spouse and not separated?

Hi, Kendall. Ganun din ang ginawa ko when I was asked to get an NBI clearance for the hagwon. Noong kumuha ako ng Permanent Residence Visa, hindi pa requirement ang NBI clearance, but now it’s one of the requirements. Salamat sa info mo.

hello po ngyon po october 31, 2014 ay nagaasikaso po ako ng papers para po sa pagapply ng permanent visa. kasama nrin po ngayon sa requirements ang NBI, mejo complicated po kasi kelangan may red ribbon from DFA.. so yesterday po ay pumunta ako sa philippine embassy para kumuha ng NBI, kinuha po ang info ko at finger prints, at ako po mismo ang magpapadala sa aking pamilya sa pilipinas para sila ang magasikaso nito at ipapadala ulit sakin, gusto po sana ako nlng ang magasikaso nito, kaso po wala po akong budget para makapunta sa pinas kaya po nagask nlng po ako favor sa pamilya ko na sila ang magasikaso for me..

Yes, pwede ka na kumuha ng PERMANENT RESIDENCE VISA… kahit wala kang anak. Hindi naman iyon isa sa mga requirements. If you have stayed in Korea for 2 years, pwede kana na mag-apply for F5 or Korean citizenship. Naka-indicate sa post ko na ito ang requirements for F5.

I just want to ask question i am Filipina.im marries with korean man im holding f6visa and still yet not citizen we dont have child.2years of our marriage suddenly i knew last july that my husband is playing with paid girls and until now he continuesly meeting different girls and paid for sex i know all of information because i had all of messages and conversations of them.its really hard for me almost everyday i cry.is it possible to file a case for my husband?is there any possibility that i can stay here in korea even we are separated. Once you get permanent residency in korea (not kr citizen) would it be easier to travel abroad already. I mean, getting ur visa approved if you travel say to the U.S.?
Im a bit worried re what Bob said… was denied because his kr ability wasnt good enough for the immigratiom officer.

Hindi pwedeng cancel ng husband mo ang F6 visa mo na basta-basta na lang, di katulad ng dating spouse visa (F2), at kung ayaw niya itong renew, pwede mo itong renew and maari ka mag-stay ng Korea. Tulad ng sabi mo, may other woman ang husband mo, kaya may karapatan ka na ipaglaban ang visa mo. Wag mo iasa lahat sa asawa mo, lalo na you cannot trust him anymore dahil sa ginawa niya. Kahit sinabi pa niya na tutulungan ka niya mag-renew, gumawa ka na ng paraan, seek help. Please humingi ka ng tulong sa damunhwa center or multicultural family center malapit sa inyo. They will help you process your visa and matutulungan ka din nila na kumunsulta ng lawyer kung kinakailangan.

Dipende sa kanya yun, kung irerenew niya. Ano ba visa ang hawak mo? Spouse visa ba? Kung spouse visa pa ang hawak mo or F-6 visa, you are required to renew it every year. Ilang years kana sa Korea? Pwede kana kumuha ng permanent residence visa kung may 2 years ka na dito. In that case, you won’t need your husband to renew the visa for you.

Ang ibig mo ba sabihin ay kung makakakuha ka ng permanent residence visa kahit divorce na kayo and kung makakabalik ka sa Korea? Kung binasa mong mabuti and post, nakalagay dyan na pwede ka mag-apply ng permanent residence visa kahit na divorce ka sa Korean husband mo… kung:
1) may katibayan ka na ang husband mo ang dahilan ng paghihiwalay niyo or he’s to blame for the divorce, halimbawa, he is physically/emotionally abusing you or meron siyang kabit
2) ang iyong kabiyak ay pumanaw or declared “missing” by the court
3) mayroon kayong anak pero hindi na kayo nagsasama dahil divorced na kayo, at ikaw ang nangangalaga sa anak mo na menor de edad
Ang permanent residence visa ay hindi kailangan renew. Wala itong expiration date, and you are not sponsored by your husband.

Kung mahusay ka ng mag-Korean and matagal ka na rin naman nakatira sa Korea, pwede kana kumuha ng Korean citizenship/naturalization. You will have to submit certain requirements and take a test. As for permanent residence visa, I’ve mentioned the requirements in this post. Merong interview sa pagkuha ng permanent residence visa, but no written exam as far as I know.
The following may (also) apply for PERMANENT RESIDENCY:

Now regarding your age, wala ka naman magiging problem sa CFO kung legal ang marriage nyo, which means may legal consent from your parents. Ung mga kinakasal na under 18 ang nagkakaproblema kasi surely hindi legal ang kasal nila dahil nga sa underage pa. Ito ang mga requirements para maka-attend ng CFO guidance and counseling program:

Hello, Anjanette. Mas maigi para sayo ang spouse visa ang kunin mo before ka umalis ng bansa. Kasal naman kayo, so I don’t see any reason para hindi ka makakuha ng visa kung ang concern mo lang naman ay ang certificate of employment. Madami naman Pinay na nakakuha ng spouse visa na unemployed sila dito sa Pilipinas. Hindi requirement ang certificate of employment sa pagkuha ng spouse visa. Good afternoon po. Hihingi lang po ako ng ilang advice.. I’m only 18 years old. I got married to my korean husband last january 13, 2014. Balak po sana namin na mag apply po muna ako ng tourist visa. Ang problema po wala po akong work kaya wala po akong maiipresent na Certificate of Employment.. hindi naman po ako makakuha ng spouse visa dahil po baka po bumagsak po ako na makakuha ng CFO dahil sa edad ko. Hello po… Wala no po ako visa… Nagfile ng divorce ang asawa ko two weeks pagkadating ko dito nung 2008 and pinirmahan ko lang yun kasi galit na galit saken yung nanay nya wala nako magawa kundi umalis… So bali 5 years Nako walang visa… Makapag-apply kaya ako ng residence visa pagnabayaran ko fine ko… Pahelp naman po panu ang gagawin ko at sino ang pwedeng tawagan…

The NBI clearance I got last year was for the academy I was working in, so I wrote “FOR EMPLOYMENT” under purpose. You can download the form here: http://www.nbi.gov.ph/index.html.
If you are getting an NBI clearance for your spouse visa, get the green form. Write “FOR RESIDENCE ABROAD” or “FOR IMMIGRATION”.

Hi Cris! Regarding on the permanent visa using the eligibility for underage child and divorced from a korean national, I called the immigration and they told me upon narrating to them what I learn from you as well as from the site you have provided I can only apply for a tourist visa which I cannot work. But my main reason to go is to work for my daughter. If it says that I can apply for resident visa since I have my under age child with me, I’m confused why this immigration would offer me just a tourist one. Kindly, enlighten me please. 🙂

The copy of real estate registration and house lease contract is NOT required from both of you, and of course, it should be the one from Korea. You are applying for PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN KOREA, so why would you submit a certificate of employment that says you work outside of Korea? If you are currently employed in Korea, you can present them your certificate of employment, along with your partner’s. If not, your partner’s certificate of employment alone will suffice.

Hi. ANGELIE is right. ^^ One of the requirements would be an invitation letter from a Korean national, your husband. Also, you will have to submit your husband’s passport… so if you don’t have hubby’s permission, how can you get these requirements and invite your family to Korea, unless, of course, if you are a naturalized Korean citizen?

Those days, weeks or months you have been out of the country will be deducted from your period of stay, but you have been staying in SK since 2009, so you have actually exceeded the 2 year requirement. You can apply for the F5 now. When I got mine, the NBI clearance was not a requirement, but according to some Pinays who applied for the F5 recently, there’s criminal background check now.

You can get permanent residence visa even if you are not married to a Korean. Let’s say, you marry someone who is a naturalized Korean citizen.

Hi, Jaz. ^^ You will be asked to submit the same requirements I have mentioned on this post and some documents that will prove that your child is under your care. As far as I know, if you have custody of your child, you don’t have to prove that your husband is to blame for your divorce when you apply for the permanent residence visa. I first landed in Korea in 2005 on E-7 visa and departed in 2007.
I got married to a Korean national in 2008 in Korea but lived in UAE.
I re entered Korea in Nov 2010 on a F-2 (now F-6) visa.
I have been living until now here.
I don’t have any investment here except that Iam in a job.
Would it be possible for me to apply for a F-5 visa this Nov?
Staying two years in Korea means without going out for vacations since I goto my home country twice per year.

Hi, Kimberly. ^^ Hindi mo naman kailangan mag-take ng Korean language proficiency test kung this year ka mag-aaply ng visa. Ang Korean language prof test na new visa regulation ay para sa mga mag-aaply ng visa next year. Sa ngayon ang kailangan lang for F5 visa application ay ang interview kasama ng husband mo. Tatanungin kayo about your marriage, financial status, where you live, your jobs, etc. May mga requirements din na need niyo submit. I’m sure nabasa mo sa post na ito kung anu-ano ung mga un, for example, ang wedding album niyo bilang katunayan na kinasal kayo, statement of bank account, etc. Ang ibang Pinay na kumuha ng F5 visa na naka-usap ko, hindi naman ininterview in Korean, pero nung ako I was given an interview. Dipende kasi sa immigration. I got my visa from Yangju, mas strict ata sila dun kaya kahit di naman requirement na mag-undergo ako ng interview, I was given the interview.

How many years have you been here in SK?
You can get a permanent residence visa if you have lived in South Korea for two years. You can even apply for Korean citizenship if you are already good in Korean after two years.

Should you decide to get permanent residence visa, your naturalization application will be pulled out. Isa lang kasi ang pwede mo applyan. Sa totoo lang, mas mabuti para sayo kung makukuha mo ang citizenship, lalo na your husband is planning to divorce you. Yung sagot ng asawa mo, hindi un sapat, he has to tell you everything. Kung wala kang nakikitang reason para hiwalayan ka niya, you better ask yourself, ikaw may nakikita kabang reason/s para hiwalayan siya? Kung meron, let’s say, he’s cheating, and then you have evidence, ikaw ang mag-file ng divorce, and sa pagkaka-alam ko, may habol ka for financial support kung siya ang may kasalanan or dahilan ng pagkakahiwalay. Regarding this, mas mabuti kung ang tanungin mo yung higit na nakaka-alam sa divorce law ng Korea. I’m sorry to hear this. Kung sure ka na idi-divorce ka ng husband mo, dapat alamin mo kung ano ang reasons niya. Habang di pa siya nag-f-file ng divorce, make your move na… asikasuhin mo na agad ang naturalization or ang permanent residence mo. Mahusay ka ng mag-Korean diba? I-follow up mo ung application mo for naturalization, tumawag ka sa immigration and alamin mo kung kelan ibibigay sayo un, or kung meron ka pa need na gawin or i-submit before mo makuha.

Hi, Diane. ^^ Parang ang tagal naman ata ng one year, alam ko it takes a few months lang for the naturalization application to be approved. Did you submit the certificates? Diba they will give you certificates upon completion of the language course and after passing the final exam? Have you tried to contact the immigration office where you applied for naturalization? Noong na-delay and F5 ko, hubby called the immigration. I waited for almost 3 months for that to be sent to me. Minsan na-dedelay daw talaga, pero one year is so long. I think you better call and ask what’s causing the delay.

hi…i have a relative that had worked in korea for the past six years as factory worker. And he told me to apply also after the slight tense between south korea and nokor. I am graduate of BS accounting management here in philippines,can possibly i work as bank teller or any related work in my course(phil bank.i.e,BDO,METRO BANK,WESTERN UNION). And if possible that i am already working there wether factory worker or office staff in case,and i have met a korean women there and got married,do you have relevant information regarding these if a filipino man married into a koreana woman. Hi, Sonja. ^^ Noong ako ang nag-apply for the permanent residence visa, I wasn’t required to get a police or NBI clearance, but based on the info I got, ngayon dipende sa immigration, ni-re-require ang NBI clearance. Alam ko hindi police clearance. Kumuha ka na ng NBI clearance para sigurado. Pag ni-require ng immigration sayo, e di meron kana. Besides, kung mag-wo-work ka, magagamit mo din ang NBI clearance.

Noong kami dinala namin lahat ng bank accounts namin, income receipts, contract lease ng apartment, un na lahat. We weren’t questioned about our financial ability. Basta kung ano lang ang meron kami sa mga accounts namin, un ang dinala namin and okay naman sa official na nag-interview sa amin.

Hi good evening po..i just found this site and has a very useful information. I’m a widow of a korean nationality for almost more than a year na and i’m staying here in korea with a job that support my living. I just renew my visa last year by myself and will expire next year but i’m planning to apply for a permanent visa (f5) before august this year, do you think i can encounter some of trouble or what should i need to do? i don’t have that 30,000.000won, all i have is my job (i’ll be going to 2yrs in this year to my company) and i stay here in korea for more than 2yrs na. I don’t have parents in-law and sad to say, i need to move from our apartment to another place in this august because it’s not allow to transfer apartment name contract to under my name because i’m still a f6 holder. Please, would you please help me to find an answer or solution or a right way for me to do in my case? Thank you so much~

I applied for the F5 this month. The immigration offical told me that starting in August 2013, they will be requiring a Korean language proficiency test for the F5. For those who are not fluent in Korean (myself included), you should apply for the F5 before August 2013, because after that point, it is going to get a lot harder to apply. I don’t know about others, but I’m working all day, and the Korean classes provided by the government tend to be scheduled on week days, so I’ve never been able to attend one.
Criminal background check was also required this month when I submitted my F5 application.

i just saw your blog and I find it very helpful! I wanna ask about my friend’s case. she got married to her korean husband almost 3 years ago but they only lived together for 2 months. 2months after she came here in korea, her husband wanted to divorce her due to sexual reason. her husband is not satisfied with her on bed. but she did not agree to divorce him since the family of her husband told her that she can stay with them and help her to get korean citizenship. so the husband left her, and went to other country. while my friend stayed with her in laws and worked for them with a very little salary and did not allow her to get another job. the husband did not come back to korea for 2 years until last month. so the husband came and filed a divorce they both agreed. while my friend met a korean man just recently and told her that he is willing to marry her after her divorce. is that possible? if so, what will be her status in the immigration? her ARC still have 1 year and 7 months validity since she just renewed it last year. if ever she will remarry, does she need to go back to the philippines? hope you can help or give some advice. thank you! 🙂

Hi! Thanks for ur response. I heard that is the latest rule for getting an F5 visa – a red-ribboned NBI clearance. I even called the Immigration hotline here in SK and they confirmed me that it is really needed. I also heard that other Pinays even went to the Phils. to process it themselves but I think that is not a good idea and a waste of time :(. I just hope it is really not needed so I can already apply for the visa. I hope you could help me with the latest info. Thanks and God bless! ^^

Hi, Mambugan. Sorry, my reply took so long. I wanted to ask a more reliable source regarding your situation, and I was able to gather the same info I have briefly discussed in this post. You are ELIGIBLE FOR THE PERMANENT RESIDENCE VISA if:
•you are divorced or separated from a Korean spouse and you can prove that your Korean spouse is liable for the divorce or separation
•you are rearing an underage child/children and you want to stay in Korea after being divorced/separated from your Korean spouse
From what I understand, your child is underage and is under your care. I don’t know the reason for your divorce, but if it was your ex-husband who is to blame for that, this could help you with the permanent residence visa, too.

When I applied for the permanent residence visa, I wasn’t required to submit my NBI clearance. Last year, though, I needed to get my NBI clearance for my work in the hagwon. I had to go to the Philippine embassy in Seoul to get the form and fill it out there. I was told to send it to the Philippines and have a relative process it for me. They won’t do the processing/approval in the Philippine embassy in Seoul. Processing has to be done in NBI (Manila). My cousin was the one who took care of the document for me, and he said it was tedious. (You know how it is in Pinas.) Anyway, I was able to get my NBI clearance after a month. It was sent to me in SK… by my family. I wasn’t asked to have it translated in Korean, nor was I asked to have it approved by the Korean embassy. What do you need the translation for? It isn’t one of the requirements for F5, as far as I know.

Hi! I am planning to apply for F5 visa. It is more convenient I think since it does not require exam and interview. I am not fluent in the Korean language yet. However, I heard that the immigration have stricter rules now when it comes to the NBI clearance that needs to be red-ribboned in DFA Philippines. I am just confused with the correct process of getting the NBI clearance. They say it is also needed to be handed in directly to the Korean embassy in the Philippines. And that it is also needed to be translated in Korean. I guess that is too complicated. How true is that? Do you know the details by any chance? I would appreciate your response. Hi, Chris. ^^ If you are planning to go to Korea as a tourist, there won’t be a problem as long as you submit all the requirements. I know some Pinoys who come to Korea every now and then para bakasyon lang or to watch their favorite K-pop star’s concerts. Yung iba they come here for business. Some are invited by family members who are either married to Koreans or are working LEGALLY here in SK. Kung plan mo magpunta dito for traveling purposes only, you can’t apply for a job, as that would be ILLEGAL. May mga nakilala akong ilang Pinoy na nag-aaral dito and at the same time nagtratrabaho part-time. Legal naman ang magturo dito kung may student visa ka, pero not full time, and dapat may recommendation from your prof (through a letter). hi. i just want to ask how can i go back to korea if im divorced with my former husband which is a korean national? we had a child and our child is living with me here in the philippines. what are the necessary steps for me to take? im confused,ive been to korean embassy for quiet sometime just to know how will i get back to korea. i’ve been to korea last 2007, i worked there for a year but i have to get back because my visa will expire soon. my former husband said that there is a chance for me to go back to korea but he doesn’t know how. can you help us with our problem. pls give me instructions on how to fix my visa again for my child. i had difficulty fixing mine because i was divorced in korea. thank you for your prompt reply to this. more power.

i am an ESL teacher here in the philippines and i have been teaching
for the last 6 years or so. what kind of visa should i apply for if i wanna go to korea?
well for traveling purposes only (i heard that with my background, it will be difficult for me to apply for a visa unless i am married to a korean woman. is that true?). as i do my travel, one of my former student told me that her aunt operates an ESL academy that teaches
kids. i am actually thinking of grabbing the opportunity but the thing is, yes, the visa. i am actually confused and have no clue on what i should do. please help me.

Hi, Manila. =) Usually, if a Filipina/Filipino is marrying a Korean citizen, she/he is asked to attend the CFO seminar, but in your case, you are marrying a Filipino who is going to Korea, is that right? I think that you should ask the Korean embassy what requirements your husband/husband-to-be should complete. If he is going to Korea, what visa should he apply for? This is the first thing you should ask them in the embassy. I am a little confused, though. You said that you have the f5 visa, but you are marrying a Filipino? Were you married to a Korean and got divorced? (I hope it’s not rude to ask. I just want to understand your situation.) If this is the case, all inquiries should be coming from the Korean embassy, or since you are in SK, ask the immigration office. I’m sorry, I can’t give you more information on this.

Hi, Nhai. ^^ The F-5 visa is different from Korean citizenship. F-5 is just a permanent residence visa. It doesn’t make you a Korean citizen (yet). After 2 years of staying in Korea, you can apply for either F-5 or Korean citizenship. If you would like to get Korean citizenship, you must pass the interview which will be in Korean. In getting F-5, you don’t need to be interviewed. Maybe you will be asked a few questions (like in my case), but that depends on the officer handling your application.

hi christ. i’ve just read ur blog, im just confuse bet. f5 which is permanent residence with korean citizenship so is it different thing?? what if i want to get korean citizenship, after 2yrs of stay here can i just apply for it right away?? and will it be differ in requirements? or after 2yrs of stay here in korea you can just apply for f5 and not korean citizenship?

Hi, JJ! ^^ You can’t keep the old ID. They’re going to get it. While waiting for your new ARC, you won’t have any ID, and you’re not allowed to travel abroad, because you’ll need that when you get back to Korea.

Hi, Reah! ^^ There is no exam for the F-5 visa, since it is just a permanent residence visa; however there might be an interview. I had an interview and I was asked to speak Korean. I didn’t speak straight Korean, because I’m not that fluent in the language yet.

Hi, Enash! ^^ My Mom got her police clearance in Pampanga two weeks ago, and all she brought with her were her cedula or CTC, barangay clearance and some money. She didn’t need a passport photo, because there’s a digital camera in the municipal police station, she was told. You will be given a form in the police station, which you will fill out. Our municipal hall in Pampanga is more systematic now. The procedures are explained on a piece of paper that is given to the applicant. My Mom didn’t have to line up and wait like forever. I think, the system is better now… just not sure if it’s the same thing in Manila or other areas in the Phils. Expect to get your police clearance the next day.
If you are in SK, just go to the Philippine embassy and ask for a police clearance form. You will have to fill out and send that form to the Philippines. You can’t apply for a police clearance in SK. The application is done in the Philippines. Someone can do that for you, let’s say, a family member… but you have to send the family member a letter of authorization, with your filled out police clearance form and a valid ID. ^^ The same thing applies for NBI clearance. Most immigration officials I have met were nice and accommodating, except the one who interviewed me when I was getting an F-5 visa. I was surprised there was an interview. It was just a permanent visa, not Korean citizenship.
My husband told me they’re becoming more strict now, or maybe it depends on the official or the immigration office handling your case.
So did you get the visa in the end?

I am a European guy married to a Korean woman and recently we went through this process. the immigration guy came to our apt suddenly at 10am on a Sunday morning to interview us. he interviewed me in Korean, was not happy with my language ability and rejected me on the spot. he also said they prefer to give the visa to women than men because Korea already has enough men.

Hi, Bloe_angel. ^^ They asked me how my husband and I met, where we got married, if I’m working in SK now, what my job is, if I’m learning Korean and how/where/from whom, why I can’t speak Korean well when I have stayed here for 2 years… other questions were hard to understand for someone like me who is not very fluent in Korean (yet). Every time I turned to my husband for translation, the official was staring at me, so I stopped answering her questions, stared at her, too… ^^ but those questions I could understand, I answered in English.

F-6 is the new F-2 visa. They started issuing F-6 visas this 2011, exclusively for foreigners marrying Koreans.
It can also be given to someone who is divorced to a Korean, or whose husband passed away.
