Seollal (설날: Lunar New year) is one of the most important traditional holidays in Korea.
Our family doesn’t perform elaborate ancestral rites, but we have a special meal in my parents-in-law’s house. We bow to the in-laws to honor them and wish them a long and healthy life. We also give them money gift. The children in the family bow to us, the adults, and we “must” give them money. It’s just like giving “aginaldo” to our godchildren in the Philippines. Sometimes I get lucky, because my mother-in-law is generous. She also gives me money gift, which I pretend to refuse… but end up taking anyway… Hahaha!

My Korean family always requests my japchae
(잡채: stir-fried glass noodles) when it’s Lunar New year or Thanksgiving Day. It’s one of the traditional side dishes for Seollal and Chuseok. I’d like to share with you how I prepare this dish. You can buy most of the ingredients in a Korean Mart, such as the noodles, dangmyeon (당면), sesame oil, sesame seeds, etc., and use any vegetables or meat available in a Filipino market.
